Thea: Tomorrow night?

She’d started typing out more, explaining why tonight didn’t work, but deleted it. She didn’t owe anyone, definitely not her pandemic friend with benefits, an explanation.

Gabe: Can’t wait. Your place or mine?

Thea: Yours @ 9?

She hadn’t had a man over at her place for… she stopped to think. Never. She loved living alone. No need to negotiate about different levels of cleanliness, or who loaded the dishwasher wrong. Olivia asked her from time to time if she ever got lonely, but she liked being able to do whatever she wanted whenever she wanted.

It also supported her idea of how a writer’s home should be: books strewn all over the place, multiple stacks of paper in each room, lots of pens whose caps were lost to the ages. Could it be neater? Sure, but the mess worked for her.

A writer's life wasn’t without its stresses thanks to money, or lack of, and an unpredictable schedule, but she was lucky to have saved enough of a buffer from her last non-writing job to not have to check every morning if she had enough money to pay rent. For now, at least.
